World travel is becoming easier than ever. With so many resources, trips can be planned out in advance and executed with little trouble. Most of the time, this is how it works; however, there are always situations where something must be adjusted in the moment. Having to think on your feet isn’t always an easy thing to do. Many people attempt to do this and fail. This is why it’s important to try and learn from those who have managed to successfully plan, travel, and come back with stories worth sharing.

Near-Death Experience While Traveling

Near-death experiences happen all too often while traveling to distant realms. One such experience took place in the Golden Triangle, located on the borders of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. This is a particularly dangerous area to travel through, known for its terrorist activity, drugs wars, and human trafficking. While riding his motorbike through this region on a tight schedule, one traveler made a wrong turn down a dirt path that looked like a shortcut. As he traveled down this path, he was surrounded by a group of armed men who kicked his bike to the side and pointed a gun at him. They ordered the traveler to empty his pockets, but nothing happened as quickly as they had hoped. The traveler always carries a bottle opener on his keychain for situations like this, though it isn’t known why. Regardless, out of this bottle opener, he managed to catch the eye of the gunner, who was immediately distracted enough for him to take control of his bike and speed away from the scene.

Theft in South East Asia

Another traveler headed off to Thailand on a solo adventure not long ago. He went to beautiful island beaches and had a great time exploring the culture. While staying in one of the more rural locations, he decided to get some shut-eye outside under a tree. Not long after closing his eyes did someone attempt to steal from him. If it weren’t for the earplugs that blocked out all noise around him, this traveler would have never known. When he woke up, he found that someone had attempted to steal his sunglasses and wallet out of his bag while it was next to him. Had these earplugs not been there, he probably would’ve woken up feeling the weight of the bag being lifted off of him with everything inside gone.

Getting Sick While Abroad

When a person is traveling, they will likely get sick. More often than not, the traveler will catch this illness from something they ate or drank. The best course of action for this situation is to take some over-the-counter medication recommended by a pharmacist and rest. This is the best option for anyone who wants to avoid getting sicker while traveling abroad. However, there are some situations where this might not work out. If the illness starts to become more serious or debilitating instead of improving on its own, it’s time to visit a doctor before continuing with the trip.

Traveling to new places is a lot of fun. However, it can be difficult when trying to adjust on the fly in an unfamiliar environment. By learning from those who have experienced these struggles, many travelers will become more prepared when their turn comes around.
